This expression, first recorded in , is thought to allude to the cat-o'-nine-tails, or "cat," a whip with nine lashes widely used to punish offenders in the British military. Ed Lacy (Aug - January 7, ), born Leonard "Len" S. Zinberg, was an American writer of crime and detective , who was white, is credited with creating "the first credible African-American PI" character in fiction, Toussaint "Touie" Marcus Moore.
